[attr="class","app-content2"]+ PROTECTIVE: it is his defining trait. he will risk his life to make sure the people he cares for are safe. it stems as a trait from his mother. when he was a kid she was all he had, and he was all she had. they looked out for each other. when they didn't have enough food for the both of them she'd always give him a larger portion. she'd even skip a meal sometimes just to make sure he's able to eat. it's her protectiveness that rubbed off onto him and now he emulates it. he will do whatever it takes to keep them safe. whatever.[break][break]
+ MERCILESS: his passiveness is not to be mistaken for weakness. if and when he's pushed to that point he will fuck you up. he will become ruthless. he can and will make your life miserable. this especially applies to those who threaten the people he cares for. if someone even proves to be a threat he won't hesitate to strike them down before they're able to do harm. there was once a miner he worked with who was a misogynist: he'd treat women poorly, but his prejudice never reached his mother. until one day when things got too heated he approached her with the intent to harm. only he was never able to. he never worked at the mine ever again (mostly because he couldn't).[break][break]
+ HUMBLE: he knows what it's like to live a life with almost nothing, to scrape by just barely able to survive. he's experienced it. he's lived it. so he never takes things for granted. any opportunities he has he's thankful for, and he never flaunts them. he knows just to appreciate them. he also tries not to compare his life to others, no matter how much better theirs might be.[break][break]
+/- PASSIVE: his mother always taught him to avoid fights whenever he could, that nothing good can come out of them. he avoids violence unless it is absolutely necessary, opting to back down from a fight when challenged. he has a good grasp over his emotions and is usually able to calm himself down before things escalate. his passiveness doesn't apply to pokemon, however, as he understands that that's how they grow: by battling each other. though when possible he chooses to spare them, choosing not to faint them.[break][break]
- CARELESS: only recently has he grown to be more careless. it stems from desperation: he has to keep her alive, and the only way to do that is to keep paying her hospital bills. he'll take whatever job he can to make money, even if it's dirty money. because of his new mindset he now often rushes into things without second-thinking, jumping at the first opportunity to make money. he doesn't care what happens to him. he'll throw himself at whatever, even if there's a chance it harms him. anything to keep her alive.[break][break]
- INSECURE: she's told him on multiple occasions to just let her go, that she's not worth it. some might call him selfish or stubborn, but in reality he's just insecure with himself. the main reason he doesn't want to lose her is because she's all he has. once she's gone he'll have nothing. his biggest fear is to be left alone with nothing and no one. she's his rock, and quite frankly he doesn't know how he'll function if she's gone.[break][break]
- DEPENDENT: he doesn't know how to function on his own without anything to support himself on. he latches himself onto people, puts his trust into them, and very often bases his decisions off of them. he's very good at keeping the people he cares for safe and cared for, but he's not quite sure how to care for himself. he doesn't know what's best for him unless he's told. he visits her as much as he can and will ask her for advice mostly because he can't find the answers to his questions on his own.

[attr="class","app-content2"]for as long as he can remember it's always been just the two of them. he remembers staying up late at night waiting for her to come home. he'd stare at the light underneath the door, waiting ever so eagerly for shadows to cast over it. he remembers what her footsteps sound like: light, spaced apart as if she's trying not to wake him up. but he's always up. he's always waiting. and no matter how light she may have stepped he always knows when she's home. the creaking of the floorboards give her away.[break][break]
and when the door finally swings open he'd jump off the same piece of shit mattress they've had for years and run into her arms. he so clearly remembers what she smelled like: sweat, coal, cigarettes. he never minded it. even at that age he understood the sacrifices she had to make for him. for them. she worked back-to-back jobs, taking awful hours just to make ends meet. she wanted the best for him, and she honestly tried her best to give him the life he deserves. she thought it wasn't enough but all he ever needed was her: his mother.[break][break]
things became easier for the both of them when he got old enough to start working. in the day he'd go to a school that they could barely afford and at night he'd work at a little convenience store by their home. he was never fond of his job; most of what he did was just stacking the shelves. but mr. roberts was a good employer and a kind man, so he didn't mind helping him. he still visits every now and then, whenever he finds the time to.[break][break]
but after a while it became evident that they couldn't afford to send him to school anymore. he dropped that, and by then he'd grown strong enough to work at the mine. it was a dangerous profession and they knew the risks, hell, mother was the one who got him the job. they couldn't be too picky about what they did. they didn't have the credentials or experience for much else. he'd work at the mine in the day which sometimes dragged on late into the night, but he still helped out at the store whenever he could.[break][break]
mining very quickly became his life. he'd wake up early every morning even before daybreak. mother would still be sleeping, exhausted from work but she'd still get up about an hour later. he'd have some water to hydrate himself, give her a kiss on the forehead before leaving for the mine. she'd always smile when he'd kiss her. he never mentioned it to her but he always knew she was awake, no matter how well she tried to pretend. he never left without giving her a kiss.[break][break]
the mine functioned like a family: they'd all look out for one another and despite the very brief hazing they gave him for being new, he fell into their mindset and considered them his family. the work was strenuous and tiring. bruises and calluses tainted his hands that were always stained by coal. it's hard. he struggled. but in the end he didn't mind it.[break][break]
he took up more hours the older he became which meant lesser hours for her. that was the idea anyways, but she was always trying to give him the life he deserved. she didn't take any less hours and spent almost an equal amount of time as he did at the mine. she was however given a promotion to supervisor which meant not having to go down into the mine as much. but the mine soon underwent a change in management, and not long after that the awakening struck.[break][break]
management was stubborn. they didn't close the mine when they should've, forcing them to continue doing their jobs even the harshest of conditions. the mine became unstable under the intense heat: explosions became more of a regular occurrence, most suffered heat strokes, and the death toll went up significantly. but they still wouldn't close it.[break][break]
eventually the league stepped in and seized operations, but by that point it was too late; the damage's been done. they worked in a soot-covered environment for weeks, months even. most of the older workers' health tanked. the majority of them suffered some form of lung condition. he was fine. he was still healthy. but she wasn't.[break][break]
soot, smoke, and fuck knows got to her. acute respiratory distress syndrome is what they called it. the awakening's made her bedridden, confined to the hospital under life support with mechanical ventilation. the medical terms don't mean much to him. he knows he can't afford it; the hospital bills are racking up by the minute. but he can't let her go. he can't lose her. she's his everything. he's growing more desperate and is even willing to compromise himself just to keep her alive. to keep her with him.[break][break]
